this is the first day of my cross country trip. i am on my way to denver, colorado - the next location i've chosen to rest for a little while. i stopped in portland, maine, to visit my sister and her son and take a few photos of them.
after we ate some lunch and finished our shoot, i left them so that i could go meet a stranger. the "old port" of portland is wonderfully picturesque, so i was excited about what i would find.
i didn't make it far before i saw iqbal standing in a doorway of an indian restaurant. he was smoking a cigarette on a break and looked like he was practicing for the part of a james dean remake movie.
i went up to him and told him about the project and asked if i could photograph him. he was fine with the whole thing and stood there with a lot of patience. his look is intense, but i can see a smile just under the surface. i think he was amused.
if anyone ends up in the old port, take a lunch at "passage to india" on wharf street and say hi to iqbal for me.
